Reliable Wi-Fi connection for ÖBB Postbus

The starting point: a desire for connectivity

With 135 million passengers per year, ÖBB Postbus GmbH is the largest bus company in the Austrian market. Given this high number of passengers annually and the fact that its routes are primarily located in rural areas, the need for reliable connectivity across its entire fleet presented a significant challenge. The fact that the majority of passengers are schoolchildren, who place great importance on a stable internet connection during their journeys, underscored the necessity of transitioning to a digital and networked fleet to remain competitive.

The solution: Unwired software and Teltonika hardware

Against this backdrop, Postbus identified its need for a universal solution that would guarantee reliable connectivity regardless of location, while also offering straightforward installation and management. Following a public tender, Unwired Networks ultimately won over the client with its Unwired Edge Cloud and the compatible Teltonika RUT955 high-performance router. Equipped with LTE Cat 4 internet, dual SIM capability, and auto-failover, the router meets all the requirements for stable connectivity.

Later in the project, the Unwired Cloud OS firmware was installed on all devices, enabling setup in the individual buses to be completed in minutes without complicated on-site configuration. Maintenance is also seamless thanks to the Unwired Edge Cloud, which manages and monitors all device and network settings. Furthermore, since Unwired Networks, as an internet service provider, assumes liability for data traffic and enables the blocking of unwanted content via content filters, the company is additionally protected from user misuse.

At the end of the project, every ÖBB vehicle was equipped with the desired passenger Wi-Fi solution thanks to a combination of user-friendly software, powerful firmware, and compatible hardware. Learn more about the entire project here.
